Why Samples are So Important for Architects

Why Samples are So Important for Architects

By on Dec 23, 2019 in News |

Samples of materials for mock-up designs are a crucial part of an architects relationship with construction contractors. This is one of the reasons why MA Polishing work with a number of architects right across the country, to ensure their metal samples look as good as possible. The first impression of the materials will help developers envision how they will look on the finished project. Here are the most common reasons why samples are specified – • They can be part of the tender process when alternative suppliers and products are being considered before an order is placed. • The sample could be required after a selection to demonstrate compliance with the specification, allowing a review of the appearance for testing to be carried out. • Some suppliers prepare the samples themselves to verify their ability to produce a product that matches the stated specification. The Role of Architects Architects need to convince a number of different people that the specified product is right for the job. If they want to use a particular product, they have used a number of times in the past, they will need to defend their decision to senior architects in their own firm plus contractors and their clients. They will also need to ensure contractors are able to install the material using standard practices. If they work with a contractor who has done the same process for say, 30 years, it will be a harder sell to convince them to switch to an alternative method. Architects may also need to prove to building owners that the product is the look they want, the quality required and fits within their budget. General contractors hold a lot of power but are often consulted later in projects about the products chosen by the architect. This means architects need to be aware of the contractor’s timetable and worker availability. The Causes of Staining in Aluminium

The Causes of Staining in Aluminium

By on Dec 12, 2019 in News |

Aluminium is naturally attractive and resistant to corrosion, unlike a lot of other metals. When exposed to dry or moist air it combines with oxygen to form a tough, transparent, protective oxide coating, meaning the aluminium won’t rust like steel, but under certain conditions aluminium can still stain. MA Polishing offer a professional metal cleaning service for aluminium, bronze, stainless steel and brass for clients right across the country. In our latest blog, we are going to share the common causes of staining in aluminium. Understanding the Impact of Staining Staining in aluminium is usually found objectionable for aesthetic reasons and doesn’t have a significant impact on strength but may cause processing problems where additional surface finishing or fabrication is required. Virtually all staining problems happen during shipping, handling and storage of aluminium. Incorrect practices result in water staining. Identifying Causes of Water Staining Aluminium and other metals can stain when water is trapped between wraps, sheets or other mating surfaces. If there is no airflow to remove the water, prolonged contact between the water and the metal causes a reaction that results in a water stain. There are two sources for this water – External Sources – The most obvious sources are rain, snow and water leaks. Water coming in contact with the surface of the aluminium from sources such as a leaking tarp on a truck or a roof leak in a storage area has the potential to cause a water stain. Moisture Condensation – Air normally controls the moisture in the form of invisible water vapor. Relative humidity expressed as a percentage provides a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the total amount of water vapor that the air actually holds. As the temperature goes up, its capacity to hold water vapor also increases. Dew point is the temperature at which water vapor from the air starts to condense and is affected by the relative humidity and air temperature. Identify Signs of Corrosion in Stainless Steel

Identify Signs of Corrosion in Stainless Steel

By on Dec 3, 2019 in News |

Here at MA Polishing we specialise in metal cleaning and polishing when it can become discoloured or damaged. We understand the importance of keeping your metal surfaces in the best condition possible. In our latest blog, we are going to identify the signs of corrosion and tell you more about crevice corrosion. Knowing the Signs of Corrosion When corrosion occurs on stainless steel it is due to free iron particles on the surface or chlorine attack. Corrosion can manifest itself as small brownish spots, often covering large areas of the surface. Corrosion can also happen when small particles transfer to the surface from improper handling or tooling, or exposure to chlorides, which can lead to pitting on the surface. Intergranular corrosion develops in severe environments and occurs when carbide precipitation has weakened the passivity of the surface. Corrosion attack occurs at the grain boundaries of the stainless steel usually in regions around welds. Understanding Crevice Corrosion Crevice corrosion happens at the joints with non-metal materials such as gaskets and seals. The passive film is inhibited by the non-metal materials and when foreign matter (such as chloride or sulphide salts) migrates to the crevice and leads to the formation of electrolytic cells. If moisture is prevented from collecting in the crevice, corrosion ceases or proceeds at a lesser rate. This condition typically happens when the gasketing is porous or the sealants cannot react properly to movement. Often the exposed surface shows little indication of corrosion, but sometimes it will show itself as rust leaching out of a gasket or sealed condition. Want to Know More?
