Brass Fire Fender Restoration | Full Process | Video
Brass Fire Fender Restoration – Before & After
Brass fire fenders are a central feature in many traditional fireplaces, especially in period properties, hotels, and heritage interiors.
Over time, however, brass surfaces lose their depth, develop heavy tarnish, and often suffer from inconsistent finishes due to wear and previous maintenance attempts.
In this project, we restored a heavily worn brass fire fender, bringing it back to a clean, rich and uniform finish.
🔍 The Condition Before Restoration
When this fire fender arrived at our workshop, it showed clear signs of age and use:
- Heavy tarnishing across the entire surface
- Uneven colour and patchy finish
- Surface contamination from handling and environmental exposure
- Loss of clarity and reflectiveness
Without proper restoration, these issues continue to worsen and permanently affect the appearance of the metal.
🛠️ The Restoration Process
To achieve a consistent and high-quality finish, we followed a structured restoration approach.
1. Surface Preparation
The first step involved cleaning and preparing the brass surface to remove contamination and build-up.
2. Refining the Metal
We carefully worked through the surface to eliminate imperfections and create an even base for polishing.
3. Machine Polishing
Using specialist polishing mops and compounds, the brass was gradually refined to restore depth, clarity and reflectivity.
Different stages of polishing were used to control the final appearance of the finish.
4. Finishing
The final stage focused on achieving a uniform tone across the entire fire fender, ensuring consistency in both colour and shine.

✨ The Final Result
The transformation is clear.
From a heavily tarnished and inconsistent surface, the fire fender was restored to a rich, clean and reflective brass finish.
This not only improves its appearance but also helps preserve the metal for long-term use.
