Uncovering a Hidden Surprise: Antique Brass Letter Slot Restoration

At MA Polishing, we regularly restore antique brass fittings, but every now and then a project presents an unexpected challenge. This antique brass letter slot appeared to be a straightforward restoration. It arrived heavily tarnished, covered in corrosion and protected by a failing lacquer coating. However, once work began, we quickly discovered there was much more hiding beneath the surface.

In this project, we carefully dismantled the letter slot, removed decades of tarnish and corrosion, restored the original brass finish, and gave the timber handle a new lease of life.

The Condition on Arrival

The letter slot arrived in poor condition. The brass surfaces were heavily tarnished and felt rough to the touch due to corrosion that had developed beneath the old lacquer coating.

The timber handle had also lost much of its original appearance and was looking dry and tired. Although the primary objective was to restore the metalwork, we wanted to improve the overall presentation of the piece wherever possible.

As with most antique hardware, preserving the original detail and craftsmanship was a key consideration throughout the restoration process.

Careful Disassembly

Before any polishing could begin, the entire letter slot was dismantled into individual components.

Taking antique pieces apart requires patience. Fasteners can be fragile after decades of use, and excessive force can easily damage original hardware. By carefully separating each component, we were able to access every surface and ensure a more thorough restoration.

Once dismantled, the components were prepared for lacquer removal and cleaning.

Lacquer Stripping and Acid Cleaning

The brass components were immersed in a stripping solution to remove the deteriorated lacquer coating and break down years of contamination.

After cleaning, the true condition of the metal became much clearer. Corrosion had formed beneath the lacquer, creating discolouration and uneven surfaces that would need further attention during polishing.

At this stage, the timber handle was lightly cleaned and treated with Renaissance Wax to revive its appearance and add a subtle sheen while preserving its character.

An Unexpected Discovery

As polishing began, a surprise emerged.

What initially appeared to be solid brass was actually nickel plated beneath the surface. As the tarnished outer layer was removed, silver-coloured metal began to appear.

This created a significant challenge. Continuing to polish aggressively risked removing decorative detail, lettering, and surface definition that would be impossible to replace.

Rather than forcing the process, we stopped and reassessed the restoration strategy.

Specialist Nickel Removal

To preserve the intricate detailing, the components were first pre-polished and then sent to a specialist plating company.

The objective was to remove the nickel plating chemically rather than mechanically. This approach allowed the plating to be stripped away without damaging the fine decorative details and lettering that make antique pieces unique.

A few days later, the components returned with the nickel successfully removed, revealing the brass beneath.

This was a crucial stage in the restoration and allowed us to continue without compromising the originality of the piece.

Final Brass Polishing

With the nickel removed, the final polishing stage could begin.

Using progressively finer polishing compounds, we carefully refined each surface while preserving the crisp edges, decorative patterns, and lettering.

Particular attention was given to the intricate recessed areas where excess compound can easily build up and obscure detail. By using controlled polishing techniques and minimal compound, we achieved a bright finish without sacrificing definition.

The result was a clean, reflective brass surface that remained faithful to the original character of the letter slot.

The Finished Result

The transformation was remarkable.

What arrived as a heavily tarnished and corroded letter slot was restored into a bright, elegant piece of antique hardware. The brass finish once again became the focal point, while the refreshed timber handle complemented the restored metalwork beautifully.

Most importantly, the intricate decorative details and original lettering were preserved throughout the process.

Projects like this highlight the importance of understanding the materials beneath the surface. Had the hidden nickel plating not been identified early, valuable detail could easily have been lost during restoration.
